My God… That Is Who You Are | Full Service

welcome to East Side where we gather all
of us each in different stage of our spiritual journey young and old all
races and colors we don’t exist for ourselves but for people people that
haven’t been invited people that haven’t been cared for who have walked away from
God people have a past that pushes others away it’s about the hurting and
those who’ve lost hope we gather as one church not as individuals not as
separate campuses but as a family pushing towards the same thing knowing
that Jesus was not for the select few but for all of us we believe Jesus is
the hope in a world of darkness and it’s through his church that the world will
find life we believe who he choose to be today will determine the world of
tomorrow so we have a vision to begin each day with purpose to open our hearts
and minds to learn something new to let go of our comfortable living to reach
the searching the broken the hurting to focus on what really matters to band
together and fight against the darkness a vision to be the church Jesus called
us to be this isn’t just a church Eastside is a movement of people who
gathered together with Jesus declaring this is for every well hello everybody thank you so much
for tuning in hey we hope you that you’re staying safe we hope that you’re
staying healthy and man we miss being able to gather together in person but
we’re so thankful for technology and the fact that we can still gather together
virtually today our team we wanted to start by singing a new song and this is
a song that’s brought me a lot of peace in the midst of all the craziness where
it seems like every hour something is changing there’s some new development
and that can bring fear and that can bring anxiety and this is a song that’s
directly from Scripture and it’s Father’s heart towards us as children
and so we just want to sing this over you today and so I hope that wherever
your app that you can receive these words as a blessing the Lord bless you and keep you make his
face shine upon and be gracious to you the Lord turn his face toward you and
give you peace the Lord bless you and keep you make his
faith Sean palm be gracious here Lord turning face toward you and give you ah uhh men ah ah the Lord bless you and keep you make his
face shine upon be gracious see Lord turning face toward you ah Oh ah day

acknowledge our need for you today and god we’re praying we I want to pray
specifically for scientists and researchers out there who are working on
a cure we’re working on things that could bring help and solutions to this
virus and we don’t think about those folks very often and we’re grateful for
the ways that they’re working all night 24-hour shifts seven days a week
God we pray for our national leaders our state leaders our local leaders give
them great wisdom and strength through this time a sense of cooperation and
unity God we also pray for those who will be or maybe have already been
impacted financially from this epidemic and we pray specifically for our Eastside family and we pray God that you would provide that you would be the
great provider and that we would see ways that you provide in ways that we
didn’t even inspect and God we pray we just boldly ask in Jesus name for the
elimination of COVID-19 we pray that you would bring healing that you would
work miracles and that we would return to you and acknowledge you one that you
would have our full attention and give you the worship and the praise that only
you deserve and we unite our prayers together across
technology and thousands of locations we unite our prayers together in Jesus name
and for his sake and right where you are everybody said amen amen well welcome everybody I’m so glad to
have you joining with me today whether you’re watching on eastside.com or
Facebook live or YouTube channel or on Vimeo and usually I begin by welcoming
all of our campuses you know like in Redlands and Bellflower and Anaheim and
and Park Rapids La Habra which of course are not gathering today so today I want
to welcome all of our home campuses and thousands of locations want to welcome
to zebes joining us from Corona California a city which may or may not
be rethinking its name in the future welcome to the Lopez family to Kim
family the Hardys there Hernandez’s the woods the Roses the Greens the Takeda’s
and just thousands more oh we even have some churches joining us who don’t have
the technology to livestream services and we are so honored to have you with
us what unprecedented times we all find
ourselves in the majority of us find ourselves you know sheltering in place
working from home teaching kids from home while our health care community and
first responders are on the front lines and we want you to know we’re praying
for all of you by the way I just got to say how grateful I am for the way so
many of you are serving and giving and donating food and supplies checking on
your neighbors I’m thankful for those who are you know driving delivery trucks
right now stocking store shelves and cooking food those who are making bold
and compassionate leadership decisions and even those who are like making us
laugh and giving us hope through social media I’m grateful for those who are
sharing toilet paper please share your toilet paper okay and could I just say
to all of you who call Eastside home thank you for your ongoing generosity
and continuing to worship God with your and offerings that they make such a
difference especially now because of your generosity we were able to provide
one thousand three hundred and sixty meals to homeless neighbors and
low-income families this week and we’re doing more of that kind of thing next
week and and assessing other opportunities with our ministry partners
so let’s keep Eastside strong during this season because after it passes and
it will pass we need to be strong and I sense the world is going to need us like
never before and I believe we need to be ready for God to do something great and
so thanks to all of you who already give electronically and if you’d like to
start giving that way it’s easy and I’m just gonna bring this up for those of
you who need that little prompt you can go to Eastside.com/give or just text
the word “Eastside” to 77977 the word “Eastside” to77977 and you’ll get a link on your phone to just set up giving
through our safe secure giving app called push pay so I’ve been in ministry
for a long time and ministering through crisis is a big part of my calling
thousands of you have been joining me for my five minute devotions and prayers
each day and honestly it’s a privilege to walk with all of you through this you
know every once in a while there’s an event that causes everyone to focus on
the same thing I’ve had the opportunity to minister after 9/11 after market
crashes after war has been declared after the assassination of Abraham
Lincoln oh well at least sometimes it feels like it’s been that long and after
thinking and reflecting and praying about like the best way I could serve
you the next few weeks I feel like the best thing I can do is to bring you a
deeper understanding of who God is and that’s why I want to begin today this
series my god that is who you are in fact there’s so much we can discover
about God by different names that he has in the Bible which reveals so much about
him you know each of us have different names that describe a lot about us for
instance to my kids I’m dad to my family and people I grew up with
I’m Geno the Eastsider’s sometimes I’m pastor Gene to all our staff I’m boss to
Barbara I’m studmuffin each name describes an aspect or a
different part of who I am and a few moments ago we sang that song that God
is a way maker and today I want to help you understand why he’s a way maker by
looking at two different names of God the first name is the first name that
the Bible uses to describe God and it’s found in the very first sentence of the
Bible in Genesis chapter 1 verse 1 where it says in the beginning God or the word
in Hebrew is Elohim created the heavens and the earth the name Elohim appears
2500 times in just the Old Testament and the first thing we learn about God is
that he is a Creator God who spoke the universe into existence the Hebrew word
for create is bara which means to create from nothing at a college professor who
is from Belgium and when he used to talk about this he would say students he
would say God created the world ex nihilo ex nihilo out of nothing if you
say hey I made these cookies from scratch do you really mean that you made
them from scratch from nothing no you started with some eggs some flour some
chocolate chips chefs bakers inventors artists architects engineers and
scientists they can make many things but not ex nihilo not out of nothing
no one can speak things into existence I mean it would be great if you could you
know if you could look at your old junky car and say let there be Mercedes or or
look at your report card that’s not so hot and say let there be AIDS but but
you can’t do that I can’t do that scientists can combine things
genetically crossbreed and even clone things but they can’t create something
out of nothing so out of nothing God moved
of nothing God created God spoke and there was something that’s Elohim in the
beginning look at that word it tells us God created time God created the heavens
that tells us God created space and what earth that he created matter
he is Elohim the God of all creation and listen if God can make something from
nothing imagine what he can do for you in your life at this time sometimes I
think we just forget when we’re going through a storm when we’re going through
a crisis even in the midst of a global pandemic we forget how big how powerful
how mighty how awesome is the God of all creation I read recently that Disney is
bringing back Rick Moranis to do a remake of the old movie Honey I Shrunk
the Kids where he plays this nerdy inventor that comes up with a machine
that can shrink things to microscopic size and then accidentally he turns it
on his own kids and he has a lot of explaining to do with his wife and thus
the title Honey I Shrunk the Kids well I’ve thought about how I would love to
have one of those machines you know kind of like Honey I Shrunk my gut or Honey I
Shrunk our mortgage well ever since the beginning of time people have been
trying to shrink God down to their size and make him smaller than he really is
some like to say you know I’ve got God shrunk down to a little figurine that I
can set on my fireplace man mantel a little symbol or image that I can carry
on some beads or hang on my wall or we condense God down into a little box
called a church building and God shows up and only lives can be changed inside
that building with there’s crosses and in stained-glass windows I think
sometimes we feel more comfortable when we can shrink God down to our size and
we say honey I shrunk our God but that will never happen
Elohim is the most shrink resistant entity in the universe he can’t be
reduced to a figurine he be confined by any box and I am faint
thankful that one of the things we’re learning in this time of crisis is that
he’s not confined to a church building he can’t be defined by our limited
understanding there is no equal to God he is Elohim the God of all creation one
time Jesus gets into a boat with his disciples it’s been a long day of
ministry and he’s exhausted and he goes to sleep in the bottom of the boat while
they make their way across the Sea of Galilee but suddenly a fierce storm
comes up the wind is howling the waves are crashing over the side the boat is
filling with water and what’s Jesus doing he’s just sleeping like a baby and
the fearful disciples wake Jesus up shouting teacher don’t you even care
we’re going to drown we’re going to drown and haven’t we all cried out to
God with questions like that in the midst of storms and crisis don’t you
even care God we had planned this wedding for a
year and now because of social distancing it’s all postponed to who
knows when don’t you even care god I studied and worked hard to get my
degree and now the graduation is canceled don’t you even care
God we work so hard to build this business to get this job and now it’s
all just slipping away because of coronavirus don’t you even care
God how am I supposed to go to work in health care as a first responder at the
supermarket when my kids are out of school don’t you even care
god these were supposed to be the best years the retirement years but the chemo
the stroke the susceptibility to Kove at 19 don’t you even care we all have had
questions for God like that right but Jesus gets up from his deep sleep and
while the waves are beating on the boat and while water is pouring over the side
and rain is pelting and while the disciples are freaking out
probably clinging to their life s he says to the storm peace be still in an instant the sea is like glass and
do you remember do you remember how the disciples responded it’s in mark 4:41 the
disciples it says were absolutely terrified who is this man they asked
each other even the wind and waves obey Him I love how they were frightened of
the storm but they were terrified of someone who could do that who could calm
it who is this man that even the wind and waves obey he is Elohim the Almighty
God who spoke them all into existence brennan manning in his little book
ruthless trust says to trust is to be absolutely convinced of the reliability
of God to trust is to be absolutely convinced of the reliability of God to
know Elohim to trust and the reliability of our Creator means that no matter what
happens to us in this life no matter how daunting the headlines are no matter how
tough the economy gets no matter what kind of storms blow into our life or
into the life of this church our response to fear will always be faith we
will unconditionally trust God to trust is to be absolutely convinced of the
reliability of God so who would you rather trust that the God of all
creation the one who speaks to the waves and wind and they listen and they obey
that is who he is and when Jesus is at the center of your life listen you’ll
have peace in the center of your soul Elohim is the first name the Bible uses
to describe God but in Exodus chapter 3 we see the first name that God uses to
describe himself and here’s the scene Moses is now 80 years old and has just
spent 40 years hiding out with sheep on the back side of mounts
sinai on the mountain of God the Bible says this in Exodus chapter 3 beginning
in verse 2 there the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames a fire from
within a bush Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up
so Moses thought I will go over and see this strange sight why the bush does not
burn up understand that Moses didn’t know that he was on the mountain of God
in fact it makes me wonder how many times we’ve like come come like that
close to the mountain of God someplace that God wants to meet us but
we didn’t realize he was there we were there so thankfully Moses is a guy guys
love burning stuff so he’s like fire cool you know and he goes over next
verses verses 4 & 5 when the Lord saw that he had gone over to look God called
to him from within the bush Moses Moses and Moses said Here I am do not come any
closer God said take off your sandals for the place where you are standing is
holy ground I’ve often wondered about this command that God gives in those
days anything holy would have to be wrapped in cloth or leather something so
that you wouldn’t actually touch it with your skin it was too holy to touch and
so following that line of reasoning you would think God would have said this is
holy ground Moses put on an extra parish sock you know workbook workbooks or
something like that but he doesn’t do that and I may be wrong on this but I
think God is saying take off your shoes because I want to get close I want to
get skin-on-skin with you I want to get personal with you I want you to
experience really experience Who I am verse 6 then God said I am the God of
your father the God of Abraham the god of Isaac and the God of Jacob and at
this Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God verses 7 and 10
the Lord said I have indeed seen the misery of my
people in Egypt I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers and I
am concerned about their suffering and then he says so now go Moses I am
sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt but
Moses says to God Who am I Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and be bring the
Israelites out of Egypt I mean Moses had the same reaction we
all have Who am I Who am I to lead and care for my family through this crisis
Who am I to bring my skills as a doctor a nurse an EMT and this time of
emergency to care for the sick Who am I to talk to my kids about their fears
their anxiety a time like this when I have my own look at what God says to
Moses I will be with you you’re not alone and look carefully at this next
verse verse 13 Moses said to God suppose I go to the Israelites easy saying I’m
not saying yes but hypothetically speaking God if I were to go do this and
and suppose I I go there and say to them the god of your father’s has sent me to
you and they ask me what is his name then what shall I tell them this is the
first time in recorded history that anyone has asked God to see some ID this
is the first time in history God has ever used a name to describe himself and
God says okay here’s what you tell them verse 14 God said to Moses I am Who I am
this is what you are to say to the Israelites I am has sent me to you now
the name that is used here in Scripture for God would have looked like this to
the Hebrew people classic Hebrew had no vowels which wasn’t a problem because
ancient Jews never even said the word it was too holy of a
word even to say but when they wrote it they added the vowels from another
Hebrew name of God Adonai and they came up with Yahweh or Jehovah it’s used six
thousand eight hundred and twenty three times in just the Old Testament you say
well I I’ve never seen it actually anytime you’ve seen the word Lord
L-O-R-D in all capital letters it’s this word right here in the English I am
translates to the verb be or I be doesn’t sound like very good grammar
does it but God says to Moses when somebody ask you who sent you you say
that I am that I have always been I always will be just tell them be sent
you I am in control I am running the planet I am the owner of everything i am
the lord i am the creator and sustainer of life i am more than enough i am the
Alpha and the Omega the beginning in the end I am inexhaustible and immeasurable
I am that I am and that’s it Who I am and if God is I am what does that mean
for you what does that mean for me it means that I am NOT maybe we all ought
to wear little nametags you know that say hello I am NOT he is the center of
the universe I am NOT he is in control I am NOT he’s all-powerful I am NOT he is
genius I am NOT he is full of unfailing love I am NOT he is holding all things
together I am NOT he is God and I am NOT the bigger I make myself the smaller I
make God and when I realize just how small I really him I can see just how
huge God is and as a result he fills me with bigger faith and
bigger strength and bigger piece and bigger security because he is God and I
am NOT there’s a scene in John chapter 8 where Jesus is in the midst of quite a
contentious dialogue with some of the Jewish leaders the Pharisees and of
course the tension is over his identity who is he and the leaders are saying
well just who do you think you are mr. bigshot or are you greater than our
father Abraham and I want you to see how Jesus responds John 8:58 he says very
truly I tell you jesus answered before Abraham was born I am what’s he trying
to do here what is he saying Jesus is saying you want to know who I am you
want to see some ID here you go before Abraham was born I am Jesus is
claiming to be the god that Moses spoke with and who led the people out of Egypt
Jesus says that’s Who I am I am the eternal God who has always been and
forever will be I spoke the world into existence and very soon I will lay down
my life for the world that rejected me and if you’re a follower of Jesus today
listen to me carefully the great I am still is and just like he was with Moses
just like he was in that boat he is with you maybe you’re watching with some
friends or family today maybe just stumbled onto this online worship
experience but I want you to know Jesus is with you and loves you the God of all
creation the great I am has made a way for you to know him to have a
relationship with him now and forever through his death on a cross through his
burial and through his resurrection and I don’t know about you but the truth
about me is when when everything in life is good when everything is going my way
when I have my health and extra money in the bank
I don’t always sense my for God like I should the trials and
hardship suffering it causes me to look up and that’s when I realize Jesus is he
just is always has been always will be a healer a freedom giver an addiction
breaker away maker and listen he’s the answer to so many of our greatest
questions right now in fact I want to ask you a series of questions we’re all
wondering about and I want to help you with the answer the answer to every
question is the great I am wherever you are let’s just say those words together
would you just say that we’ve just repeated just say I am who’s there to
help me when my retirement account has been crushed I am who is going to take
care of me and my family while the economy suffers for a while I am what if
I get coronavirus who is gonna help me I am who is smart enough to leave it lead
us out of this mess I am who’s gonna make sure that good eventually prevails
over evil I am who is gonna fill me with hope and this time of despair I am who
is gonna be my light in the darkness I am the world is such a mess who is gonna
fix it I am because I am Yohe the God of all creation I have always been and I
always will be and today I want to invite you to trust
the waymaker with your life would you bow your head and would you pray with me God we acknowledge that you were big and
we are not you were powerful and we are not you are the creator and we are not
you have always been you have always will be and we thank you for giving us
life and we thank you that we are not alone and we ask that you would be our
way maker through this storm Jesus I thank you that you’re there I pray that
today people will choose to trust with you maybe you’ve been knocking on their
their heart for a long time and and nothing has got their attention and
finally with the world at a standstill and in crisis they’re looking your
direction if that’s you today and if you just want to say yes to Jesus if you
want to invite him into your life to be your leader your forgive or your Savior
why don’t you just pray this prayer just silently right wherever you are today
would you pray it with me say Jesus today I acknowledge I’m a sinner and I
need you I need to make changes in my life just telling and today I say yes to
your love your grace today I received the payment that you made on a cross for
me two thousand years ago and created victory over sin and victory over death
when you walked out of a tomb forgive me give my life new purpose meaning hope
and a future in this life and the next if you’re praying that prayer I hope
