Improv Warm-Ups : Improv Warm-Ups: “Horseshoe” Game

This warm up is called horseshoe. And it’s
a really fun warm up for getting people used to messing up in front of each other and having
fun. And it’s good for really challenging your brain, kind of frying your brain and
getting focused in the moment. So what you’re going to do with your group of people is you’re
going to have them form a little horseshoe shape or have them form a circle and then
have two ends split off. So it’s kind of a nice little horseshoe. Once you have everybody
standing in that horseshoe shape, what you’re going to do is you’re going to have people
count off. So the first person in the horseshoe might say, “one, two, three, four, five” for
all of the five people in the horseshoe. Now you tell them that that number is for their
slot or for the position they are standing in. And the person in the number one slot
always starts. So If I’m the person standing in this number one part of the horseshoe,
I’m going to start and I’m going to call out any number. I can call out any number except
for my own number, number one, or a number higher than five because there’s nobody there.
So I’m going to call four. That’s this dude over here. Now it’s four’s turn to call a
number. Four can call any number except for their own number, four, a number higher than
five because there’s no one there, and they can’t call the number that immediately called
them, one. One is out. So if I’m four, I could call three. Now it’s three’s turn to call
a number. They can call any number except for their own number, three, a number higher
than five or the number that just called them, four. One is back in play. So I would say
something like, two, five, one, three, two, three. Oh no, I messed up. So what happens
when number two messes up? Well, we all applaud number two for messing up because we celebrate
risk taking and failure, and number two has to move to the end of the line. So now everybody’s
number who is higher than number two is shifted down one. And so people’s numbers are constantly
changing in this game. So we’d start another round real quick and people would have to
count off. Now I’m number five, these people have scooted down. Number one, however, is
still the same number since they didn’t mess up. So it’s a game where people’s numbers
are constantly shifting, people are trying to keep track of who they are and who other
people are, they’re constantly messing up, and, and getting to celebrate that and having
a lot of fun. Once you get it started, you can start kind of slowly, once people get
the hang of it, I encourage people to take risks, play faster and play with lots of commitment.
Say your number loud, say it quickly, mess up big and have lots of fun. So that’s a warm
up called horseshoe where you get to exercise your numbers brain as well as having fun messing
up in front of other people.
